Pillar Guide
Silicon Mountain: Inside Buea’s Tech Scene
Buea, Cameroon — known as “Silicon Mountain” — has quietly built one of West and Central Africa’s most dynamic tech communities. This is the inside view: who is building, what they are building, and why it matters.
If you have only heard “Silicon Mountain” mentioned in passing, you might assume it is marketing fluff. It is not. There is a real cluster of working developers, founders, and tech companies in and around Buea — the city at the foot of Mount Cameroon — and it has been quietly growing for more than a decade.
This pillar documents the scene from the inside: the history, the active companies, the venues (ActivSpaces, the university, the cafés where most of the real work happens), the challenges (internet, electricity, payments, brain drain), and where it is going next. If you are a Cameroonian thinking about entering tech, an outsider trying to understand the ecosystem, or a journalist looking for primary sources, start here.

Frequently asked questions
Where is Silicon Mountain?
Silicon Mountain is the informal name for the technology cluster centred on Buea, capital of the Southwest Region of Cameroon, and the nearby coastal city of Limbé. The name refers to Mount Cameroon, which rises directly behind Buea.
Why is Buea a tech hub in Cameroon?
Three factors: the University of Buea has produced steady cohorts of English-speaking computer-science graduates for two decades; the climate and cost of living attract talent that would otherwise leave for Douala; and a small number of anchor organisations (ActivSpaces, Skylabase, several agencies) created the early gravity that pulled others in.
What companies are based in Silicon Mountain?
The active list changes; the full and current map is maintained in the dedicated article in this series. Notable anchors over the past decade include Skylabase, ActivSpaces, Njorku, and a growing cluster of small agencies including Diggiecorp.
